Piglets Anaemia

Anaemia is the common cause of high rate mortality in newborn animals especially piglets. The main cause of Anaemia in piglets is iron deficiency. Iron is part of a protein called haemoglobin, which red blood cells need to carry from the lungs to every other parts. Iron deficiency anemia is a common finding in many domestic animals. In adult animals, it is usually due to chronic blood loss associated with other diseases. The Anaemia due to iron deficiency is responsible for; weight loss, an increase of parasitic, and infectious diseases. Pig farmers should administer iron dextran to piglets on the third day of birth repeated on the 14th day as a booster dose while supplying quality diet to the dam.
