Four (4) breeds of Pig for Commercial Purpose

 Pig farming among other livestock production is taking over and gaining popularity in the livestock industry but the choice of breed one chooses when going into commercial production determines how the farm/farmer progresses.

In this article, we'll list four ( 4) most important pig breeds every farmer needs for Commercial Purpose;

1. Landrace pig breed;

This breed originated from Denmark. It is a white pig, with a long body and floppy ears. It is endowed with good prolificacy, but also with good growth abilities. It is used mainly in crosses, especially with large white pigs. It is currently the second-largest breed in France in number.

The Landrace pig is a very versatile breed, performing well under either indoor or outdoor systems of management. The sows have the ability to produce and nurse large litters of piglets with very good daily gain and high lean meat content, in a superbly fleshed carcase, which is ideal for either fresh pork or bacon production.

2. Camborough Pig breed;
Camborough pig is known for High emphasis on lean meat percentage and conformation, Very robust hybrid boar, Good libido, Exceptional carcass musling, Superb feed conversion ratios
The breed is bred to maximize the kilograms of weaned pigs per year with
excellent feed efficiency. In addition, the Camborough can be bred typically three weeks earlier than other breeds resulting in a higher total number of piglets per sow per lifetime and lower production cost.

3. Large white Pig breed

The Large White has proved itself as a rugged and hardy breed that can withstand variations in climate and other environmental factors. Their ability to cross with and improve other breeds has given them a leading role in commercial pig production systems and breeding pyramids around the world.

4. Duroc Pig breed

   Easily adopting to environmental changes Duroc is a pig of medium to large body size. Its’ body conformation is strong with wide back and well developed rump with ample ham muscles. Duroc is of different red shades from light gold to mahogany. The ears on the medium size of head are small, folded to the front. The chest is very well developed. Legs are tall, straight and widely positioned with slightly steep  pastern. Duroc as a sire line needs to have at least 12 properly developed teat
