Breeding in Animal Production

Image
Animal Breeding is simply the application of genetic principles to enhance or improve the production efficiency of farm animals. Ugwu Emmanuel with a breeding boar Two Basic Breeding Systems ; 1. Inbreeding 2. Outbreeding Inbreeding Inbreeding is the mating of closely related animals together. It is further classified into two groups: • Close breeding •Line breeding Close breeding is the mating of sire (father) to daughters, son to Dam (mother), or full brother to full sister.  Line breeding is the mating of not too closely related animals together. Outbreeding Outbreeding is the mating of unrelated animals together. Outbreeding is subdivided into: i. Outcrossing : This is the mating of unrelated purebred animals within the same breed. ii. Crossbreeding : This is the mating of animals of different breeds together. iii. Grading-up : This is the mating of sires of a given breed to non-descript females and their offspring. A lot of Animal farmers don’t know which breeding system i...

Piglets Anaemia

Image
Anaemia is the common cause of high rate mortality in newborn animals especially piglets. The main cause of Anaemia in piglets is iron deficiency. Iron is part of a protein called haemoglobin, which red blood cells need to carry from the lungs  to every other parts. Iron deficiency anemia is a common finding in many domestic animals. In adult animals, it is usually due to chronic blood loss associated with other diseases. The Anaemia due to iron deficiency is responsible for; weight loss, an increase of parasitic, and infectious diseases. Pig farmers should administer iron dextran to piglets on the third day of birth  repeated on the 14th day as a booster dose while supplying quality diet to the dam.

Why every Pig farmer needs SHARIVIT

Image
Let's talk about why you need sharivit for a successful pig farming. Why do you need Sharivit to succeed in Pig farming? Among other components of #sharivit, we'll talk about just 3 & their effects on the pigs performance; 1. Biotin   (a B vitamin) which is important in the prevention of #lameness , #softhooves with #darkcracks , #hairloss , #scalyanddryskin , #poorgrowth , etc. The disease caused by #biotin deficient  diet affects pigs of all ages (young and old) 2. Choline   Choline, as a water-soluble nutrient, is a dietary component essential for the normal function of all cells and participates in vital biological progress during fetal development. #choline deficiency during pregnancy also affects the nutrient composition of sow milk up to 19 days after birth. If milk composition is altered as a result of #choline deficiency during pregnancy, this could have implications on the quality of nutrition the offspring(piglets) receives. 3. Folic acid  (als...

SELECTION OF A BREEDING GILT⁣

Image
It is very important to select a good gilt since it contributes half the quality of the herd.   Facts to consider while selecting breeding Gilt: ⁣ • Gilts selected to have at least 12 teats so as to accommodate a large litter⁣ • Gilts to be selected from sows, which wean at least 9 piglets per litter and are known to be good mothers and first farrowing at one year of age and farrowing interval of seven month.⁣ • Select breeding gilts at weaning period, further selection should be done 5-6 months of age.⁣ • Select fast growing weaners. These will likely consume less feed per unit live weight gain. Thus less costly to keep.⁣ • Select gilts which have developed hams and comparatively light heads.⁣ • The selected gilts should have good body confirmation i.e. strong legs, sound feet etc.⁣ • Gilt should not be select for breeding purpose if having supernumerary and inverted teats, and fat deposited at the base of the teats⁣ • Gilt must be at least 8 months old at first service.⁣ Age to...
